Themes In Blade Runner – Essay

18 May

Follow these steps:
1. Research a theme here and develop a thesis based on how the theme is illustrated throughout the film. Note: You do not have to use a theme from the Wikipedia page- in fact, you are better off developing one on your own that we discussed in class.
2. Use the information found in the articles as support for your theme.
3. Be sure to use specific examples from the film and your film analysis vocabulary.
4. You MUST include one of the following: text to world, text to text OR text to self
5. You MUST submit your essay to http://www.turnitin.com in addition to a hard copy. Essays not submitted online will not be graded.

NOTE: Your theme *cannot* be “Deckard is a Replicant” – that is too vague.

Your theme instead should be a specific idea about life, philosophy, existentialism, the creation inevitably turns on the creator/the prodigal son, identity (example: memories create identity) that relates to Blade Runner and HOW Ridley Scott demonstrates the theme.

Other articles of interest:

NOTE: WHEN YOU QUOTE THE ARTICLES, YOU MUST INCLUDE CITATIONS.  Failure to cite a source is plagiarism.

What makes a good discussion question?

4 May

OUR GOAL:  To determine the reader’s level of comprehension of the text and to have a lively and interesting class discussion of the material.

These are starting points, and may not serve as your questions.

Make your question much more specific than the “starters” below.

Remember, your objective is to engage the class in an active and thoughtful discussion about the text.

AVOID:             simple questions
question with a “yes” or “no” answer
plot summary questions

Topics to cover: Plot- WHAT, WHEN, HOW, PREDICT

How is the plot developing?

What has happened so far and what are the ramifications of…
Why does the author write about….
What do you think may happen in the future?

Characters- WHO, WHY

Who is involved?
Why do characters act as they do, or what’s their motivation?
What purpose are the characters serving?

Setting- WHERE, WHY, TO WHAT PURPOSE

Why the author chose this setting
How does it affect characters
To what end does the setting exist?

Opinion

What is the reader’s opinion of _____ events/plot/etc
Use contrasting opinions to generate discussion.

Remember, the quality of your questions will dictate the success of the class discussion!
